Our Initiatives

The Shades Project STL offers a range of programs designed to empower and uplift the LGBTQ+ community. Through Artistic Expression for Social Change, we harness the power of creativity to challenge stereotypes and inspire dialogue. Our Advocacy and Policy Engagement program fights for LGBTQ+ rights by influencing policies and dismantling systemic barriers. We foster connection and support with Community Convening and Support, providing safe spaces for individuals to collaborate and unite. Empowerment Through Education offers workshops and training on LGBTQ+ rights, health, and leadership, equipping individuals with the knowledge to thrive. Additionally, our Youth and Family Outreach program supports LGBTQ+ youth and their families with mentorship, counseling, and resources to foster understanding and acceptance.

Finding Allies Through Ballroom

FAB, which stands for Finding Allies through Ballroom, is an initiative dedicated to building community, fostering inclusivity, and celebrating artistic expression within the queer community through the art of Ballroom. FAB creates a safe and welcoming space where individuals from diverse backgrounds can connect, support one another, and showcase their creativity. By using the transformative power of Ballroom culture, FAB promotes love, acceptance, and empowerment, encouraging both participants and spectators to embrace their unique identities while finding allies within a vibrant and supportive community.

KIKI Street

Block Party

Kiki Street is a vibrant, community-driven block party designed to celebrate Black queer culture and bring together folks aged 16-30 for an unforgettable night of fun, empowerment, and education. Rooted in the rich traditions of Ballroom culture, Kiki Street provides a sober, safe space for self-expression, creativity, and connection.

This event highlights the intersection of culture and care, offering attendees not only the chance to engage in voguing, dancing, and runway competitions, but also access critical services like STI screenings and health resources. Through panel discussions with Ballroom leaders, mini classes, and lively competitions, Kiki Street fosters both fun and learning, promoting community health and wellness.

Whether you're coming to learn about the culture, express yourself on the runway, or just vibe with the music and the crowd, Kiki Street is where Black queer excellence shines—where you can walk the block and own the floor, all in an inclusive and supportive environment.
